I am an art photographer based in Southern California. With a background in filmmaking, I tend to bring a narrative approach to my photographic studies of people, places and the human condition. I was first introduced to photography early on in college, where I found solace and my creative voice in the darkroom, which I describe to this day as, finding the first glimmer of a piece of my authentic self.
It was something I enjoyed doing immensely, something I was told I was good at (which I was not use to hearing), and something that I did not recognize in myself until later, after years of living, when life brought me back to photography full-time, back to my authentic self.
I am heavily drawn to simplicity and negative space in my photographs. I tend to find that beauty and truth resides between the two. For me, each series, each photo, represents degrees of personal emotional growth as well as degrees of identification others find in themselves, which inevitably has given way to my gratitude and humbled appreciation for connection with others. I believe that when you view an image for the first time, and it either softens your gaze, melts all of your senses, or ignites your mind with nostalgia, thought, question or intrigue, then you have found the piece of artwork that stirs your soul and has bridged a connection.
I have been fortunate enough to have been recognized by a variety of online publications, and group exhibitions, as well as being published on a handful of book covers domestically and internationally. Normally I would not have chosen an image of myself that looks so serious, as I tend to smile naturally whether I'm happy or nervous. However, I chose this image of myself, because my daughter took this photo a few years ago at the age of nine, and not only did she capture some lovely light coming through the window at the time, but she captured a side of me that I tend to hide from most people. A more serious thoughtful side. I like that. It's honest.
